These ectopic beats occur in the upper two chambers of the heart, called the atria. These beats are not as serious as Premature Ventricular Contractions (PVCs) and usually require no medical care. Individuals with this condition usually report feeling that their heart stops or misses a beat. Like PVCs, PACs are called heart palpitations. In many cases doctors are unable to determine a cause. Some cells in the heart (ectopic foci) start to fire or go off before the normal heartbeat is supposed to occur. This happens in the sinoatrial node (SA node).
